I was fortunate enough to be asked to come and share some records from my native homeland on one of YouTube's fastest rising channels. It's a bit like what Boiler Room was back in 2011, but more my tempo - a nice setting, plants and vinyl only.

"MAJ (a.k.a. My Analog Journal) is a YouTube channel that curates vinyl-only mixes on a weekly basis. Every mix focuses on a certain genre, country, or region, era, or simply an idea or a theme."

I am interested in all styles of music which always makes it tricky when trying to portray your personality via a 45 minute mix, but I gave it a go. I've embedded the recording below :)

A brief history of sounds popular in the township shebeens of South Africa 1972-2021 with @kaaaaaaandries

I grew up in 90’s South Africa and this is just a small sample of the musical variety I was exposed to while following my dad around the township we lived in as he socialised w/ family, friends and colleagues. Sadly many of the genre’s that emerged while I was growing up were not pressed onto vinyl so we’re missing so much music from the post-1999 Kwaito and pre-2015 afro house eras, but here I managed to squeeze in 45 mins from 1970’s Afro Rock (popular in Zimbabwe) to 1980’s bubblegum/synth disco all the way to modern day Qgom and Amapiano. “
